Hi Andrew,
Re the above posting.
As bad as this is, and as relevant to the Supercity debate as it is, it is nevertheless honest reporting to note that this Scoop sourced article is in turn sourced from a Richard Northey media release dated Jan 31 2008 - which is to say it refers to an early - Jan 23 2008 - Performance Monitoring Committee meeting of the current C&R dominated ACC.

However it is relevant to note that such resolutions do not appear on the ACC website under their referenced 'Committee Meetings - Performance Monitoring Committee - Jan 23 2008' web reference due to 'public disclosure' justifications.

Perhaps you might also post in full WICPG's full "Further Evidence / Submissions" to the Auckland Council Supercity Bill and which is dated July 21 2009 and which will be spoken to on Tuesday next at the Waiheke Hearing of the Select Committee.

Cheers, ccw

NO WHEELIE BINS! LETS LEARN FROM OTHERS' MISTAKES!
Other communities around the world have already been through this failed experiment and have come out the other end screaming for a change back to the way things were- the way things are... here...now. We are a time machine- we have the choice of falling into the same hole, which has been clearly shown to us by the examples of others, or stepping around it...at least we will not be able to say we didn't know what would happen.

Reason #6- They encourage vandalisn-see this article-

I've heard that someone on the island has purchased the mulcher that used to be operated by CleanStream and is planning to operate it to create mulch... but thats about all I know at this point and am not sure who exactly it was that purchased it. Hopefully we'll have something like you mention operating soon and less profit for TPI.

HI all at waiheke one.. On behalf of the direct action group this morning at the refuse station, I have made an official complaint tot he ARC for TPI's lack of responsibility to address our communities needs to safely and responsibly accept our toxic waste we wished to dump this morning.
I contacted ARC and spoke to a man called Evile, who assured me he would handle it, with his colleagues, and agreed that it was a bad situation if TPI wasn't taking our toxic waste.

So an email was sent at 10.55am to him and he has said he will contact me as soon as possible on what was to happen as a result. I stressed that it was a dire and dangerous situation that our people could risk harm in trying to have this toxic waste accepted by TPI.

Dear Evile,

I am making a urgent complaint about the lack of response that the new contractors for the island, TPI, are giving us to our need to drop off toxic waste to the local Transfer station on Waiheke Island. Today is their first day of taking on the new contract to safely dispose of our toxic waste and to recycle our other waste, but it appears they are not doing their job. We have been waiting since 7.30 this morning to dump this toxic waste and they refuse to talk to us, open their gates, nor have they indicated publicly in the local media that the transfer station would be closed today. So we assumed they would be open from 7.30am.

About 9.30am they finally received a bag of recyclables from us, and we were assured they would actually recycle the glass and plastic, so we are under the understanding that TP I will actively follow through on that request. However they continue to ignore us on other recyclable waste. As I'm writing this, one of our people is standing on a shakey ladder in the wind and cold weather presently trying to get some sort of response from TPI workers to take our toxic waste, but sadly we are being ignored. This is a dire situation as we have no where else to dump this toxic waste, not to mention the extremely unsafe condition to which we have to gain access to TPI's service. Should any of us have an accident or fall off our ladders then ARC will be responsible no doubt.

Please can you bring this to the attention of the appropriate authorities in your division and let me know what has been done to change this dilemma as soon as possible. We will continue to wait all day if it takes that to ensure they do their job properly.

My name is Delaine Jones and you can contact me on 372 9082.

Yours sincerely
Delaine Jones

I have been thinking about green waste. Apart from the broader issues and the decision-making process and and and - don't get me started! - it really upsets me to think of greenery being trucked off the island. I can't think of a less sustainable way to manage this type of 'waste'. I have been musing about how I could increase my composting to cope with things like tree-prunings, hedge cuttings, trees blown ovver in storms and so on - these things are too big to go into my compost bins. I could buy a chipper, I guess, but don't really want to go to that length. I wonder if someone could start a service on the island like CleanStream does at present to collect and compost/make mulch? What would be involved? How much land would be needed? Machinery costs? Would it be financially viable? Anything else?
