Super City – Have your say
Auckland is undergoing a major reconfiguration of its local Government. The four cities and Auckland Regional Council are being re-arranged into a single city with a main council and a second tier of local councils.
In principle this is good thing – but the detail of how this takes place is very important. We could end up with a highly centralised, unrepresentative and corporatised council with a cadre of self interested councillors detached from local communities. On the other hand we could end up with a broad based collection of engaged and empowered community councils, lead by and united by a meaningful unifying body.
Do we trust the government and Rodney Hide to give us the latter? – no we do not. Will Waiheke be given appropriate consideration? – only if we make our voice heard clearly.
Submissions Processs
The first stage of the submissions process was to write into the select committee with your views and opinions. That closed on the 26th June with over 2250 submissions from all over Auckland. Some of the submissions from Waiheke are shown below.
The second stage was the oral hearings. The select committee met on on Waiheke on the 21st July – at the Dunes in Onetangi. There was a great turnout and a long session of very clearly expressed views.
